Purpose : To evaluate the overall surgical result of modified Brostrom procedure without calcaneofibular ligament reconstruction and to evaluate difference of surgical result between athletic group and non-athletic group.
Materials and Methods : Eighty eight feet with chronic ankle instability treated by modified Brostrom procedure without calcaneofibular ligament reconstruction evaluated retrospectively from January 1994 to February 2000. The consecutive series of patients comprised 59 males and 29 females with average age of 28 years old. 41 patients were high level amateur or professional athletes. The operation procedure were only anterior talofibular ligament reconstruction with inferior extensor retinaculum reinforcement. A subjective grading scale medified from Hamilton was used to classify the results. To evaluate the difference between athlete and non-athlete, we subdivided the patient as athlete and non-athlete group.
Results : There were 70 excellent, 13 good and 5 fair as a whole for single modified Brostrom procedure. Of the 41 athletes operated, there were 35 excellent, 4 good and 2 fair. Among the 47 non-athletes, there were 35 excellent, 9 good, 3 fair results.
Conclusion : Modified Brostrom procedure without calcaneofibular ligament reconstruction showed excellent to good results in 94% and there wes no significant difference between athlete and non-athlete group in terms of surgical result and morbidity time from the injury .
